What is Driver in computers? A driver is a program or software which works as a link between the computer and hardware device. The driver makes the hardware device run properly on the computer, e.g. Printer, Webcam, USB dongle, Modem, Routers and many more…

How to install the driver?

Nowadays, most of the operating system (OS) comes with inbuilt drivers -- for most of the hardware devices; like – display, keyboard, mouse, soundcard and LAN card; so you can just plug in the device and it will run properly.

A driver is like a controller which controls a particular device attached to the computer -- on how it should run.

Still, there are devices which will need a driver to make it run properly -- Let’s find out how to install the drivers for them. Usually, the hardware device comes with inbuilt driver software in it, so when you plug-in the device to your computer it will prompt you to install the driver -- e.g. flashdrive or USBdongle.

Or, it will come with a driver disc which you will need to install from the disc before you can use your hardware device – e.g. printer or router.

What if you lost your driver disc?


Imagine you want to re-install your hardware device to your computer and you have lost the driver disc which came along with it. What now?

You just need to visit the manufacturer’s website of your device, (often it is available in the support or download section) and search for its driver as per the model of your device.

Once you find it, you need to choose the driver as per the OS on which you want to install the driver (OS like -- Windows, Linux, and Mac). Just download the latest version of the driver of your device and install it on your computer.

Want to update the device driver? Follow the below steps:


1. Go to Control Panel and select Device Manager option, or go to search option and type Device Manager and click on Device Manager.

2. It will open the list of all the hardware devices installed on your computer. For e.g. -- you have already installed drivers for your router and now it is prompting a message to upgrade its driver.

3. From the list of hardware devices, find the router option and double click on it, it will show the name of the router – right click on it, it will show the option to Update Driver Software, just select that option and follow the instructions to update the driver.

One more important point to remember while installing or upgrading your device driver:


Before installing or upgrading the device driver, make sure to find the system type of your computer; i.e. -- 32-bit or 64-bit system type.

What is 32-bit or 64-bit system type?


It’s a term which refers, on how a computer processor (CPU) will process the information. 64-bit system type is capable of handling a large amount of data or information more efficiently compared to 32-bit system type.

The key advantage of the 64-bit system is that it supports more memory i.e. 4 GB and above -- compared to the 32-bit system which supports memory up to 4 GB only. So, 64 bit systems are faster compared to 32 bit.

Let’s find if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of OS.


If you are running Windows OS, then right click on Computer icon and then click on Properties option.

1. Under System, you can view the system type.

2. If you are running WindowsXP on your computer, under System option you will see “x64 Edition” mentioned, means your computer is running a 64-bit version of OS.

3. If under System option you don’t see “x64 Edition” mentioned, means your computer is running a 32-bit version of OS.

4. In case your computer is running on Windows 7.0 or Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, once you are in System option, under System Type, you will see 32 bit or 64 bit mentioned as per the type of version running on your computer.

If you are using Linux OS, for e.g. Ubuntu – commands like, “uname –a” or “uname –m” or “arch” can be used to find whether your system is 32-bit (“i686” or “i386”) or 64-bit (“x86_64”).

1. You can also click on System Settings which will open a dialog box; there you need to click on Details under System option. In Details dialog box; under Overview option, you will be able to find OS type: 32 bit or 64 bit mentioned.

2. To find system type on Mac OS, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac option.

3. Click the More Info button and then click the System Report button.

4. Under the Hardware Overview option, check the Processor Name.

From the below-mentioned processor names, you can identify the system type.


Once you find the system type of your computer, you need to install the device driver accordingly, since 32-bit device driver will not work with 64-bit system type and vice-a-versa.
